I used to love going out with friends at the weekend, but lately, we've all started to enjoy staying in more and finding new ways to enjoy ourselves while trying to save money. And it turns out we're not the only ones.

According to Business Insider, a trend dubbed "hometainment" has emerged and people are now way less likely to spend time or money eating out and drinking, but more likely to stay at home and entertain themselves for a fraction of the price.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out how you save money if you're not out on the town paying £10+ per cocktail and eating the latest burger gimmick, but how do you stop yourself from getting bored and entertain yourself on a budget?

Host a spa night

Everyone gets so stressed during the week so why not take it in turns to host a pampering session? Set up stations around your house for hair, nails, face and even massage points if you want to hire someone to treat your guests. Ask everyone to bring their favourite DIY beauty products, a bathrobe and slippers, light a few candles and fetch a couple of spare towels and there you have it, your own spa night. Invite your favourite people around to catch up and have a gossip while feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Enjoy a movie night

There's an endless stream of media constantly available at our fingertips so why pay ridiculous prices when you can enjoy a film in the comfort of your own home? You can keep it simple and enjoy your favourite film alone with a bag of goodies, or go all out and make it a themed night with your friends, watching classic trilogies like Star Wars or Harry Potter. The choice is yours!

Throw your own 'Come Dine With Me'

Take it in turns to host your very own Come Dine With Me nights. While it may seem expensive, you are saving money not cooking for the rest of the week. If you really want to split the cost, you could also alternative so one person brings a starter, main or dessert every night. And what makes a perfect dessert for dinner and entertaining? Candy floss of course!

Raise money for charity

Charities like Macmillan often send invitations to host your own night in for charity. So if you're planning on staying in any way, why not keep a look out for a charity you support and donate the money you would have otherwise spent going out and put it towards a good cause? Invite friends and family to get involved to make your night in one to remember.
